Reading Curriculum and Instructional Material
Act 20 states that all Wisconsin schools are required to provide science-based early literacy instruction in both universal and intervention settings. Science-based early literacy instruction is defined as the following. Instruction that is systematic and explicit and consists of all the following:
- Phonological awareness
- Phonemic awareness
- Phonics
- Building background knowledge
- Oral language development
- Vocabulary building
- Instruction in writing
- Instruction in comprehension
- Reading fluency
Currently, our students are provided grade level instruction in literacy using our Board approved literacy resource, CKLA. We do not employ the three-cueing model in our literacy instruction or intervention. CKLA was reviewed by our local literacy taskforce, recommended to the Board of Education for adoption and fully adopted in December 2022. Additionally, CKLA is on the DPI list of approved resources.
As part of our curriculum review cycle, we will continue to review what resources best meet the requirements of ACT 20 and the needs of our students. During the 2026-2027 school year, we will initiate a comprehensive review of recommended resources from DPI and possibly implement new and/or additional resources in the 2027-2028 school year. For more information on CKLA, you can visit their website HERE.
