The Montello School District is focused on the success of each of the students we serve. Grounded in continuous improvement, there is a comprehensive academic program in place to meet the needs of our diverse learning community. This includes a focus on the science of reading, including the foundational areas in early literacy, and numeracy across the grades in order to improve reading, writing, and mathematics performance for all learners and targeted career readiness programs, such as Youth Apprenticeship and Work-Study, to prepare students for the career of their choice. Additionally, our students have access to select reading, math and behavior interventions, unique electives, such as Agriculture studies and Music Appreciation, advanced learning options and online schooling options to meet individual needs. These, of course, are just a few highlights of our efforts. Please reference the included resources on this page for further information.
Assessment at Montello Schools
The Montello School District participates in the Wisconsin State Assessment System. Information from the Wisconsin Department of Instruction on this assessment system can found at https://dpi.wi.gov/assessment. This assessment system includes:
- Assessment of Reading Readiness (MSD uses aimswebPlus and i-Ready)
- Wisconsin Forward Exam
- Dynamic Learning Maps
- PreACT Secure
- ACT
- ACCESS for ELLs
- NAEP (for selected grades only)
The federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) requires that all students participate in statewide standardized testing in grades 3-8 and once in high school. In Wisconsin, this requirement is met through the administration of the WI Forward Exam in Grades 3-8, the PreACT Secure in Grades 9-10 and the ACT with writing in Grade 11.
When a parent or guardian requests that the student be excused from participating in state testing, this request must be honored at grades 4, 8, and 9-11, per Wis. Stats. 118.30(2)(b)3. Requests may come at any time during the testing window. A parent must submit a written request for student opt-out to the building principal (Grades 4, 8, and 9-11) or the school board (any other grade level). For more information regarding state testing required under the ESEA, visit DPI's Assessment FAQs page.
The Wisconsin State Assessment System (WSAS) is a comprehensive statewide system of assessment that provides information about what students know and are able to do in core subjects.

In addition to the state assessment system, we use other tools to identify student needs and necessary adjustments to our teaching or curriculum. This is done on a regular basis throughout the school year using assessment partners, such as i-Ready Diagnostic and aimswebPlus, and classroom level assessment information. For more information, please view the Resources links on the right.
